Clutch To The Floor - Master, Slave Or Clutch Problem?

Hey all,

I have a 96 Ranger 4.0L with a bit of a problem. My clutch goes almost all the way down to the floor with very little resistance. For me to switch gears I have to pump the hell out of the clutch and I'll maybe be able to force it into a gear. I think I'm loosing fluid since I had to refill it once not long ago. My question is if the problem's still there after I replace the master & slave cylinder, then I replaced them for no reason. So if my clutch is bad, would it cause the pedal to hit the floor with almost no resistance?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.....Dave

You probably had air get into the hydraulic system when it ran low on fluid. When you topped up the fluid the air was still in the master and lines resulting in a soft pedal and improper clutch release.

If this is the case the only way to solve this is to bleed the entire clutch hydraulic system. I would bleed it first and see if it solves the problem. If the problem comes back after a while, then you have a problem with the master, line, or most likely the slave cylinder.:icon_welder:

Cocoa...sounds like good advise and also the most inexpensive option. I'll try that first before I start tearing things apart.

More importantly though, why would my fluid be low in the first place. I'm pretty sure I remember filling it up about 6-9 months ago.

Thanks for your help...I'll keep you posted.

djo,

Also while you're down there bleeding the clutch, take the little rectangular plug off of the lower side of the bell housing... feel around with your finger and if it comes out with brake/hydraulic fluid on it then you have a bad slave. if you see fluid on your rug or floor mat, means the master went. cause it bolts right up to your firewall.

I jut redid my entire clutch system because i had the slave go, then the master went from lack of fluid.

If it comes down to the slave, i'd buy a clutch just to do it since you have to drop the trans anyway. unless you REALLY don't need one.

either way good luck bro.
