I have a '75 Mazda b1600, 4 speed and some larger 15 inch tires on it. What I'm thinking is taking the old tranny out and putting a later (78 or later) 5 speed in and possibly a 4 x 4 setup in it after overhauling the 1600. Any wisdom and/or parts would be welcome. I'd also like to retain the 15-inch, 6 lug rims as well since I am on a fixed income.

PS: I was thinking of axles off of a Toyota to retain the 6 lug wheels.

I know nothing about it but you should post pictures :) (if you haven't already) Didn't know Mazda made a pickup that far back.

You definitely would have some money tied up in doing that type of replacement. You certainly could use Toyota Axles, I know the first generation toyota tundra's still had the 6 lug style. You may have to get custom drive shafts which you probably would have to do anyways considering you would be putting in a different transmission, and with the possibility of doing a 4x4 swap you'll need a lot of custom parts made, and on a budget you will not get far at all LOL, trust me I'm stuck in somewhat the same boat with my bronco 2. So many ideas, and an empty wallet.

I know what you mean about so many ideas and an empty wallet. I also have a need to be knowledgable in carbon fiber work in aerospace applications. Don't ask for what.

This truck is old enough and rare enough to be a collectible. I would satisfy myself with a restoration. Or a body swap onto a later model chassis. Adapting later model drive lines to fit seems to be the hardest way to go.

I will when get back to my friends place. As far as when Mazda started making the B1600 and B1800 (Ford Courier), I believe it was '72 when they hit the States.

Rick, how's the truck coming?? I'm working on a 78 B1800. keeping the 14's because we found a great set of turbines, modified exhaust (baffled glasspack) and a weber.

Anything ever come of this? I have a courier
