Hey, my friend has a 2008 Ranger 4x4, and he says that when he puts it into 4low, and goes in reverse, it goes for a few feet then stops and wont go anymore. 4hi reverse works fine.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Is this some sorta built-in safety stop or some crap thats stopping it?

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe the shift motor(assuming electric shift 4x4) isn't fully engaging low range and popping out? What does it do in drive?

As far as I am aware, everything works perfectly fine in forward and reverse for 4hi, and forward in 4low. Just reverse in 4low is having issues.

Hi

I have a 2004 ranger also , 4x4 , wich has the same issue. Works fine all directions , but when in reverse in 4x4 low it goes in reverse a short distance and than stops.
No weird noises or sounds. Disengaging 4x4 low brings everything back to normal.

What about worn hubs.
When in reverse and low range the torque is higher and forces the hubs to unlock.
When this happens, go forward a little and try to back up again and see what happens.
If the truck goes backwards again then checkout the hubs.

Just guessing here !

That new doesn't have hubs, their live axles.

The only thing I can think of is that its binding in the transfer case somehow.

If you are doing this on pavement, just DON'T.

Try it in some grass or dirt.
