Hey folks, new to the site,

I have a 96 4L 5 speed ranger XLT with intermittent shifter problems, I have trouble getting into 1st and 2nd at lights, is there linkage for the shifter or does it go straight into the top of the tranny?

Steve

It should be straight into the tranny. I replaced the clutch and the shifter is screwed to the top of the tranny. Only 3 little screws hold down the shifter down to the tranny.

It could be the clutch isn't disengaging all the way.
To test, stop in a level place, put trans in 1st gear, with clutch in rev engine, if you feel truck trying to move or it does move then clutch is the issue.
If pedal needs to go all the way to the floor to disengage then it may be time to re-bleed the system or replace the clutch and slave.
If clutch reservoir has ever gotten low or dry then air could be in the system so you no longer have full pedal travel.

1st and 2nd gear would be the hardest to shift into if main input shaft was still moving, i.e. clutch not fully disengaged.

And yes, there have been problems with the shifter bushings wearing out causing hard shifts.
If shifter has a lot of play in it when in gear then bushings are worn.

Here is the fix:

Not hard or complicated but MAKE SURE you are in Neutral before dis-assembly!!!!!!
