I know everyone says to pull the motor but I don't have the option where I live. I've read people jacking up the engine to get the pan off by taking the motor mounts loose. I got under there to look and I can't figure out if I should take it loose where the mount bolts to the engine or where the mount bolts to the frame. Both look equally painful to get to. Tips/techniques for taking the mounts loose?

In the engine bay, accessed from up top, there is a single 18 mm nut on either side where the metal plates attach to the rubber isolators. THAT is what you are supposed to undo.

Thanks, I'll get to it on Monday.

generally

with these older trucks, if they dont have body lifts or fresh body mounts i also usually have to take the upper plenum loose and pull the distributor. but i have also pulled the trans mount loose to facilitate clearance as well.

i at least pop the cap loose off the dizzy.

i clean the engine well and blow it off good with compressed air and loosen the intake and move it forward a bit.

doing that i have always been able to get the engine high enough to pull pan, i pop the two nuts adsm mentioned off the engine mounts, jack up the engine and put pieces of 2x4 between the mounts and k member.

oh...

probably done this 20 times to replace rusted out pans

PIA. shops charge 500 - 700 to do it here locally.:icon_surprised:

Sounds like $500-$700 worth of goood advice!
