okay little brothers o2 sensors were bad, he didnt fix them 6months later. two days ago. his truck starts to have a vibration. also a loss of power. today we go to put his new tires on, awesome btw. and the mechanic immediatly says hey, you have cat thats going bad it smells terrible. source of the vibration.
so my question is, what now, he has a super 40 muffler, dual exhaust. should he just cut the cat off, we arent talking legality here, were talking practicality. we can get it cut off with a replacement pipe for about 150. a cat is what 200? but with the cat gone what are the down sides besides warped heads. and he has two can we get just the bad one cut off. oh and we're working on the o2 sensors. those are a pita.

Frack people are getting stupid. This is the 3rd new thread today about people asking about ditching the cats.
REPLACE THEM. It will not warp the heads if you cut them out, you will lose MPG, you will lose performance, and "we aren't talking legality"!!! WTFF!!!! IT IS A FEDERAL CRIME!!! It is punishable by up to $5000 PER MISSING CAT. Replace it. EDIT: Really? Warped heads? You think it stands a chance of warping the heads and you are still considering it? That's the equivalent of shattering your leg because it will save you 50 cents a day on bus fare!!

now how do you suggest he go about replacing them. i dont think anything from autozone is a good idea who knows. like i said before, are the two cats independent of each other? if we replace one is ia good idea to replace both? thanks.

Muffler shops are very good at replacing anything in the exhaust system. Your welcome.

You can get a really decent universal cat on ebay for around 60-65 dollars (magnaflow). There's a shop here that will weld them in for 30 dollars.
That's what I would do. |

You can sometimes skimp and find a cat made by Catco or Eastern for less. They are OK converters, but I don't think they are as good as Magnaflow.

Jeez, give the guy a break, if he wants to roll without cats he can roll without cats. or do you want to yell at him for not wearing a seatbelt too.
I'd say choose to go with whatever makes sense to you. Make a note it is against federal law to cut out the cats, but also note that many install headers on cars and see a performance gain. I'm not saying you'll see that with these motors as I have no experience, so take it with a grain of salt. I have seen that if you remove the cats the exhaust will get a bit louder too, but again, I've only seen it done on other vehicles and not these trucks.

Yes, especially if he is one of those people who buckle the belt around behind the back of the seat to shut off the dinger.

he doesnt wear a seat belt because if he gets in a wreck our dad will kill him, and he'd rather be DOA.
