Default cracked heads on 4.0

I just inherited my dads 99 ranger. The heads on the 4.0 engine are cracked.

The truck has 91k on it and my dad bought new. On line I found rebuilt engines with new heads for around 2k. I wounder if I should just replace the engine if rebuilds are this cheep instead of just replacing heads?

I will only drive the truck about 5k per year. Mostly to pull my pop up camper, which will include one 10 day trip per year to the rocky mountains.

On the other hand new heads are realy cheep and my 88 2.9 v6 lasted 200k.

Opinions on what I should do?

Hmmm. I'll vote head replacement only. I could always get a short block later if necessary.

Cracked my heads at 89k and now at 130k I think they are gone again. (Yet to track down the issue) if its the gaskets ill replace them. But if the heads are cracked again I'm gonna go 5.0. Its actually cheaper. I can pick up wrecked v8 explorers all day here in MD for $500 with good motors and trans.

Then again that's me. If your only gonna put 5k a year on it. I would replace the heads
