I bought this truck new in 1992 and promptly took it to Baja for 3 months. The truck has been nothing but "Old Faithful", TTB and all. After wallowing around North America with the worst bump-steer ever engineered into a vehicle, it was time to turn it into a proper camping rig. Just thought I'd share a few of the build shots and some poser finish shots. The real road test comes up at the end of this month with a Utah overlanding trip. A quick list of the mods:
35 x 17 Pro Comp Extreme MTs
79 full-size Bronco front axle
4.56 gears and an ARB
Bilstein 2.5 x 12 coil-overs
Bilstein air bumps
5.0 Atlas transfer case
92 F-150 8.8 rear axle
4.56 gears and a Detroit Locker
All Pro Baja leaf rear springs
Bilstein 5150 rear shocks
3" Deaver shackles with flipped brackets
15 gal extra fuel cell
12,000 lb. winch
160 amp alternator
Bushwacker cut out flares
Tepui Kukenam roof top tent
and probably a couple dozen other little things that I forgot to mention.
I'm a fabricator and I run a small shop (really small, in this economy) where I normally build tube chassis and comp vehicles. With as slow as things have been, I figured I would rebuild the old girl to take the place of the wife's FJ Cruiser (great rig, but we were beating the shit out of it - we go camping in some really interesting places.) I know this post is nowhere near as thorough or as well put together as most of the posts on this site, but again, I'm a welder - not very good with the computer stuff.:icon_welder:

thanks, I appreciate it. The rack system was something that I've wanted to do to this truck for about a decade. I stuck a couple of pictures in here of the "inspirations" I've had. My jeep took me back to my Marine Corps days of take only what you need, travel light, travel fast. Not many creature comforts. The wife's FJ is built for this kind of use with a full Bilstein suspension and tons of storage, but it's her daily driver and it's already made one visit to the body shop. The idea that I had for the rack system was to have everything in boxes, nothing loose and to keep the RTT as low as possible. We plan on posting up some more pictures after our Utah trip. It's kind of exciting - I've owned the truck for 20 years and this trip feels like it's the first time I've ever taken it out.:icon_welder:

Thanks. Unfortunately, I only have pictures of my own personal stuff on my computer. Everything else was on 35mm and, like I say, I'm a computer caveman. I couldn't resist posting a couple of pics of my motorhome that I built.

i love that motorhome , old Autocar's are sweet , what Engine does it have , i see it's a Cat , and where i live they have a name for them kind of trucks , they are called a Toterhome

That is an amazingly functional rig. It's like what I wanted to turn my ranger into, but much, much better.

Awesome rig! I hope my truck looks as great when the SAS is done. How much lift do you think you ended up netting front and rear?
