what kind of gears should i get in my 1999 automatic 3.0 ranger 4x4 its about to b lifted and on 35s i only want to do the rear, dont know if this makes a difference or not but i plan on converting the tranny to manual in the future but what kind of gears and how much would they run me$$ not counting labor???????????? plan on babying this truck, using it as daily driver, and never letting it touch sand any suggestions thanks????????

for 35s and a 3.slow i would do an 8.8 and 4.88 gears at least... reason is cause the stock 7.5 rear end is weak and the tallest gears you can get are 4.56s and 7.5s are jus crap all the way around (rep me if this helped you at all :D )

oh and gears will cost about 250-350 depending on brand and the 8.8 axle can be got for about 100 to 150

You know that you won't be able to use the 4x4 until you get the gear sets matched again, right?

I thought they quit using the 7.5 in like 1991....?:icon_confused:

3.slow auto with 35's?? You have a 8.8 or the 7.5 rear end? 35's are not a wise choice with a 7.5. With 35's you are gonna have crap gas mileage on the road. 33's are a much better choice for everyday use. Gas is gong way up already. It is $3.89 here for 87 octane. Over $4.30 for 93 octane. Expect to spend right at $1,000 or a bit more for the front and rear gear parts and labour. If you can do it yourself you will save a few hundred. To swap to an 8.8 rear end will be another expense if you have the 7.5.

yea i tried to see what rear end and gears it already had in it by looking at the tag but i dint see no tag so im thinking i can probably tell by the vin number or something but i know 35s is prolly not a wise choice and i dont care if the 4wheel drive works or not i got a short commute to work less than 5 miles and i just want it to look sweet i just got a set of 35s with 20in rims 8 lug ill have to get some adapters

I dont know man. Only doing the rears just seems like a bad idea with a 4wd even if you plan on never using 4wd (seems odd to me but then again so does 8 lug on a ranger). But hey, its your truck. Hopefully it doesnt cause issues. Check and see if its a 7.5 or an 8.8. If its a 7.5 swap in an 8.8 or else you will tear up that rear axle. How big of lift are you doing?

the cheapest rear end you can get would be a 28 spline ranger 8.8 from a 4.0, i believe either in 92 or 93 all 4.0 rangers came with the 8.8.... i only say cheapest cause it has top mounted spring perches in the right place, it also just makes life easier.

yea i know i wish i had a 4.0 5 speed but i dont and i got those tires in rims for basically nothing but everything is stock on it i guess i can look it up by the vin number but i plan on putting some money in it and buying the 4in superlift suspension with 3 in body so a total of 7 inches. so your saying im going to have to change rear ends too like the axle???????

Id do both sets of gears, you never know when you're going to forget and ruin your drivetrain. Plus what's the point? And have you thought about selling the 20" wheels and tires and buying new 35s or 33s and some new smaller rims? Im sure with 20" 35's being over $300 each you could make someone a good deal and still have money left over. Plus idk if they make 5x4.5 to 8 lug adapters, but if they did they'd cost a fortune. Plus, in my opinion I thinks 20"s are for dueches.
