I just scored an Explorer 4.0 tranny and transfer case this morning. My ranger tranny went??? 2.9 runs good- but tranny will only go into reverse. Motor runs like crap tranny works in 2nd at about 2500rpm no codes. I can't see any differences other than the '92 is built better. quick glance all connections are the same. I've got today to come up with a plan. Donor motor tired tranny has 20k (so they say)
Thanks for any help
Rick

the trans will NOT work it has different valve body with electric solenoids for shift points and the 88 does not have the wiring and controller for it!!!!!
i tried this with my 88 b2

Like the above poster noted, the 88 and older A4lds (on Rangers, anyway) had a single solenoid controlling converter lockup (3-4 upshift controlled hydraulically). 89 to 94, the A4LD had two solenoids, second one controlled 3-4 upshift.

Although the newer trans will bolt up, you will have to do something if you want overdrive. Commonly, the old (single solenoid) valve body is swapped over to the new trans (if it is in decent shape). OR rig up a toggle switch to control 3-4 upshift manually. Google "A4LD 2-wire 3-wire" for more info.
