im looking at a 01 ranger ext cab with a 3.0 and an auto.

what kind of mpgs you guys pulling? my 4.0 gets offending gas mileage

I am averaging between 19 and 20 in a 1991 3.0 standard cab 5 speed. My daily commute is about 22 miles of country roads at about 60mph and then about 2 miles of in town driving, then repeat when I go home. I have about a month of driving in on this new engine and I am sure they have already switched the gas for this year so it is hard what the summer gas will bring. My best mileage in this truck(old engine) is 23 and that is all highway miles. My dad has an ext cab auto 4x4 and he says he doesn't usually get better than 18.

There are almost endless factors that contribute to fuel mileage. Average seems to be around 18mpg, but it varies widely. Some get 14-15, others see over 20. Personally, I get 17-18 mpg with e-85, and 20-22 on regular unleaded.

With pretty much all flat highway, no wind, and at 57 mph, I can easily push 25 mpg on regular. (I have a 4 hour drive between home and school) I am running e85 right now and get 18-19 in same conditions.

Yes i am one of those people that drives a little on the slow side sometimes to see what mpg I can get.

And that is in warmer weather. When it is 12* out like now, about 22 on regular and 16-17 on e85.

I usually get right at 18-19 on middle grade gasoline. but of course i have a 4x4, 4.10 gears, 5 speed and drive like a 19-year-old.

The lower gears may not help my mileage at all, but the increase of get-up-and-go vs running the wider gears is worth it imo

10-12 city and 15 highway with 3:55 gears and doing 55-60 mph

My 94 3.0 5spd 4x4 never seemed to get over 17mpg. 22mpg ONCE! Average was 15mpg.

I've also had a 2.3 5spd 4x4, it averaged 20-21mpg. And a best of 25.5mpg.

I have a SOHC 4.0 Auto 4x4 now. It has 70 more hp, and gobs more torque than the 3L. I get an average of 17/18mpg. Best was 21.5mpg. See where I'm going?

If you go for the 3.0 get a 2wd, but then.......what's stopping you from just getting a 2.3L?

i just dont need something as big as the explorer. i thought id be carrying more people.

so i looked on craigslist, and found an 01 ranger ext cab with very low miles, in my price range. its a 3.0 4wd.

if it gets better than the 13 city i get then thats fine.

reason i wont do a 2.3 is it would have to be stick to be reasonable to drive. and im not ready to drive stick everyday,

plus my father uses the truck more than me and he likes his automatics. my explorer is just getting to be a bit pricey to drive everyday.

and i have to have a truck, i cant do a car. im not the smallest person in the world.

3.0L 2wd ExCab 3.73

Almost all in city driving I typically get around 16-17mpg with summer blend. Recently switched to winter blend and now I enjoy 14 mpg. The best I ever accomplished was around 23mpg all county highway going 60mph for 60 miles both way every day for a week.

It used to jump between 21 and 14 mpg for me.... With 33x10.50 tires, stick, and 3.73's now its pretty much 15.5-16mpg no matter what the conditions.

thanks for all the input guys.

i decided against it. its not quite what im looking for.

but thanks again.

Good choice, go with a full size truck same to better mileage and more power im so fed up with my truck when I go back to full time work its getting traded in for soemthing else.

100% stock 2005 2wd 3.0L auto extended cab. Getting 16.3 mpg on the past 3 tanks not driving hard at all but probably a little more city than country driving. Kinda pissed about it. Going to do a solid round of maintenance to see if it will improve some.

since i am retarted and gutted my cat and hacked it in half and have a half of an exhaust i get about 14 haha
