This is hypothetical (kind of) so bear with me. I hate electronics and always have, if I wanted to eliminate the fuel injection system on a 2.9, would swapping the intake, carb and other related parts off of a 2.8 work? I've seen it done on small block Chevs quite often, but is there some raodblock I'm not aware of?
I'm asking because I have a chance to grab a spare 2.9 and it seems to me that the speed density system is quite limiting when it comes to modifications.
On the other hand, if it was carbed, I could do a cam swap, headers, and what not and it would actually make a difference.
Or I could just find a 2.8 and build the snot out of it as there is a TON of aftermarket goodies for it.
I'm not looking for a speed demon here, but other than a K&N and maybe opening up the exhaust, all other mods seem pointless because of the computer system that the 2.9 uses.

I wouldn't be afraid of mounting the carb on the engine itself, the spark advance is solely controlled by the computer. It will need a different distributor, which there are none that are manufactured for a carb swap on the 2.9L. It's been done, but I have no clue as to what they did.

Keep in mind that the 2.8L cam also spins backwards.

I think the 2.8L would be a fun engine to build. Flat top pistons stock, solid lifters, no timing chain/stock gears, duraspark conversion, etc.

You could always go with a MAF conversion on the 2.9L, that's what I did with my not so computer friendly camshaft. Either way, 2.9L is going to make your wallet a heck of a lot lighter for not that much more power..

Oh, pretty much anything you want to swap over is not swappable between the two.

I don't think the 2.8 intake will fit the 2.9 because heads are different. I was going to try the 2.9 heads on my 2.8 but no go.
