I bet you could damn near build some shock mount's out of the endless supply of paper clip's and stapel tho.
:icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_twisted:
that'd be a site to see.. i'd rep you if you did that :icon_rofl::thefinger:

people are always good at saying "you should have done this..." but who cares,

build your rig to your specs and ride it.

that's nice you have access to all the extra steel. i work in the insurance industry, i only have an endless supply of manila folders and printer paper
I could think of a few things to do with an endless supply of paper clips...:D

What is your target weight? I'm trying to keep mine under 5k lbs....
I'd like to keep it at/under 4k lbs. But that's probably more of a pipe dream. I've got a feeling it'll be closer to 4.5k lbs loaded.

Yup, that's just the intenet for ya :icon_thumby:

Sometimes is pays to care though. There's plenty of 'fail' examples of what you shouldn't do out there. In those cases, it would have been nice if they would have listened to someone.

For my own use, I tend to listen to it all just to make sure I haven't missed something. Its not like I build this stuff daily, so it is possible I'd over look something.

I will tend to put more weight on the comments coming from the people that have done the same/similar stuff that I'm doing.

Happy Day! The Ranger took its first ‘long’ road trip into work today (about 18 miles one way). I’m happy to report it didn’t fall apart and kill a buss load of Nuns on the way in…

With the 4:10’s, it’s a bit steep, but really not that bad at all to drive (5th gear is 2k rpms at 70 mph). You’ve got to burn a bit more clutch to get it moving, but once its rolling life is good. 4:56’s would put it back to a ‘factory’ feel, and 4:88’s is probably the sweet spot. As of right now, I’m not in a huge hurry to regear just yet.

Other than having 3 out of 4 tires out of balance, the thing rides and drives great! I’m sure by the time it gets the extra weight of the bumpers/skids/cage on there, it ought to ride like a caddy.

On to the real reason for bringing it into work, so I could borrow the forklift for a bit! There is 36" under the front tire when it is lifted in the air, and 39" under the rear when its in the air. I apologize for the poor photos in advance, but it’s a little cramped in there…

Everything looks awesome from what I can tell, my ‘best guess’ on bump stop and shock mount location seems to have worked out perfectly and the drive shaft lengths are good. At this point I need to:

-Burn in the things that are just tacked on
-Do some very minor trimming in the rear (slightly more in the front)
-Get some ~ 18" long limit straps for the front (The shock is playing limit strap in this photo):

Now its time to really get at it as I’m hoping to get most of the cage done the weekend of 5/21. That means I need to get the bumpers and sliders done quick!

Pffft.. I"ve got to trim about a 3" by 1/2" section on the lower quater panel. Its almost not worth the effort of dragging out the saw :thefinger:

nice pics.. looks good.
Thanks!

I'm good, but thanks! Once the bed gets painted (again) I'll slap the flares back on.

Nearly, it was a full range of emotions, ranging from
:icon_hornsup: = "Sweet, less than three months ago this was a pile of parts"
:shok: = "Holy Poo I hope that chick on her phone doesn't rear end me" (No rear bumper or gas tank skid, having some dumbass run under the truck in its semi-legal state was a concern).
 = "I'm really running out of time to get evertything done for its firs trip out!"
:flipoff: = "I didn't know this basball grenade shifter could rattle this much!"

There's some handling quirks that would go away if I had a trac bar or hydro assit on it, but otherwise, I was pretty happily cruising along. It was extra nice to have the A/C blasting at 35° in my wheeling rig when the outside temp was 90° as I was tooling down the highway at speed. Its safe to say that its a bit of a step up from the old XJ I had.

i never said it would be a lot! lol :icon_rofl:
Details details!

No worries, hence the :thefinger: :icon_twisted:

After this much work, I'm not in a real rush to dump it over. Especially not before our vacation later this year. Rest assured though, It will have the crap wheeled out of it!

looks good man, mines is about the same 2k at 70
Good to know, thanks!
