I just put a new tranny in my 1994 Explorer and now need to add fluid.

Book calls for 9.7 Quarts of Mercon.

I have also noted that a number of sites state "Use Only Mercon Not Dexron".

Question/s:

Many of the present fluid state that they are suitable for Mercon/Dexron Applications, i.e. Both. I need to know if these are suitable or should I use only Mercon? If so, what is the best suitable and recommended for this tranny.

I have also found a Mercon Synthetic and question the suitability of this type.

Any positive suggestions/recommendations would be very helpful since I don't want to have a premature failure of Trans.

Thanks

Mercon and Dexron III are the exact same fluid. Mercon is registered trademark of Ford and Dexron is registered trademark of GM. They just have different names for the same thing. So, Mercon/Dex III is the correct stuff to use. Mercon V supercedes the Mercon spec and would also be suitable. You can use synthetic if you want.

Tranny Fluid

Thanks for the response.

Clears the air for me to continue.
