Are all 95 & newer explorers AWD or did some come with 2wd/4wd?

I'm trying to by a 97-2000 Explorer.
I want one with the 2wd/4wd, either the electric or shifter but 2wd/4wd type.

Did they make them like that?

Everyone I have seen so far are AWD, and the seller's say it is engaged all the time.

Thanks
Bill

They were available in 2wd, selectable 4wd, and full-time AWD.

Only the V-8's had AWD from 97-00. All the V-6's are either selectable 4x4 or 2wd. Some owners might think it's Awd, because it is an auto-4x4. There are 3 t-case selections: Auto/ 4x4/ and 4-Lo. When in Auto (2wd), if the transfer case senses the rear wheels slipping it will automatically send power to the front wheels.
