Whats up fellas. It's been a while since i've been on here but i had a quick question that i'm not quite sure about. I have a 93 ranger that the front gears grenaded in. I found a wrecked 99 ranger 4x4 with 4.10 gears, i'm going to get the rear axle but i was wondering if the gears out of the front of that 99 will work in the front of my 93. Dana 35 front axle on my 93 i'am assuming the same size axle in the 99. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

No, both are D35s but the TTB is reverse cut and the IFS is standard cut.
 
That nanswers my quection then thanks. But i also have one more i just remembered about. I recently read in a petersons 4x4 mag, the one where a writer for the mag had put a jeep cherokee front axle in his ranger, i can't remember the name of the project but i thought it said that a cherokee straight axle is the same width,bolt pattern and can even bolt the ranger coils right into it with no major mods exept i think maybe something about the rad arms i can't remember. Is this true? if so, i think i'm going to try and snag one of those.

I think that was a Jeep Dana 30 they used. A Dana 30 is not an upgrade, look for an early Bronco D-44.
 
Yeah, your D35 is much sturdier than any D30 Cherokee axle. A D44 is a slight bit stronger than your 35, although not by enough to make it worth the swap IMO.

I probably would just fix the D35 (how did you grenade the gears anyway?? Gear failure is pretty rare in these things) :icon_confused:
 
well, For some unknown reason my 4x4 wouldn't engage in the front axle, i could push the button and put it in low lock, but i would only have 2 wheel drive low. So i figured my hubs were screwed up. Well, one day i was driving into town and all of a sudden i heard a loud buzzing/grinding noise then 5 seconds later BANG and the buzzing/grinding was even louder, pulled over and looked and gear lube was coming out of the pinion seal in the front end:pissedoff:. I can also grab my driveshaft and move it up and down, side to side in and out. I think my ring gear and pinion gear exploded or something. How exactly do you get the gears out of the front end? I've never done it on a TTB axle before only on rear axles and straight axles.

I saw a quote in someones sig on here about blowing up a 3.0 and i thought it was kind of funny because I have blown up a 3.0 LOL. I blew the original 3.0 up in my 93.

The Dana 35 pig comes out with all those visible front bolts and ONE invisible pinch bolt across the axle beam. You have to remove the driver's side and the outer half of the passenger side axleshafts, and of course the front driveshaft, ahead of time. The inner half of the passenger side axle is held in with a C-clip.

Removing the gears from the pig is more or less boilerplate. It's the same as the 8.8 rear, except you have to do it with the housing removed from the vehicle.

It's unfortunately quite likely that everything inside the pig is broken. It may be cost effective just to get another pig from the junkyard.
 
Well, I called randy's ring and pinion and got a quote for 4.10 gears and the master install kit for the front of my truck. They wanted 308.03 for the gears themselves and 184 for the master install kit.(I'am getting a 99 rear axle from a junk yard, 4.10 L/S). Know of any other places that might be a little cheaper? Or should I have mentioned i'am a member of the The ranger station?( I've been here for a while but the name has changed, I used to be 89Ranger4x4 nico and justin know me)

Ask Randy if they have any USED gearsets around the shop from a gear swap.

There is nothing wrong with used gears, as long as they are kept matched and are only worn (not damaged).

And as an added bonus they're already broken in.
 
Well, i ended up getting a set of 4.56 gears front and rear with the master install kits. I also managed to snag a 8.8 3.55 L/S from a 2002 2wd 4.0 ranger for a good price. I do have one other problem. My 4wd won't engage, I mean i know the front end is screwed up but i can't get it to kick on, I hit the 4x4 button,It clicks but doesn't light up and a few seconds later you can hear it click again. Would it have something to do with the 4wd shift motor on the t-case? and if so, what the hell does it look like? I've got a electronic shift 4wd 93 xploder i can steal the motor off of, i just dont know what to look for.
Also, I've got a 87 mustang GT with the stock 8.8 ring and pinion. Are the axle shafts the same spline as a ranger 28 spline? and if so, would those 3.55's work in the rear without any clearance issues?

If it's just clicking and the 4WD lights aren't coming on, I would suspect the shift motor (its the big motor-looking thing bolted to the back of the t-case).

I don't understand your gearing question though. If you got 4.56s for it, why would you need to mess around with the old 3.55s? (the Mustang axle is 28 spline though, yes)
 
not too long ago a friend of mine blew his pinion bearing and you could move the drive shaft up and down (like yours) when we got it all tore apart everything else was still good and he kept them as spares cause he had already bought a used pig from a salvage yard for 250.00. his was the D28/35 hybrid though. I Imagine the real deal would be more.
 
Well, I was wanting to try and put the 3.55's in my mustang sometime possibly. But thanks for the info on the shift motor, i kind of suspected thats what it was. I have one other question now lol. that L/S 8.8 gears. I was going to tear the thing apart last night but i couldn't figure out how the hell the little S shaped piece came out. It's on both sides of the spider gears, almost acting like thats what made it spin posi. I tried 2 pairs of vice grips trying to take the load off of the spider gears to get them out(they seem to have a pretty strong spring rate against the spider gears) but when i thought i had them moving it ended up just slipping off and going right back into the position they were in. Mind you i've pretty much only messed around with the conventional open rear diff. I've never messed with a trac-lok rearend before. Any ideas on how to get the S shaped things out? thats really the only thing holding me up on getting the rear pig out.

Rear pig? What? The carrier? The carrier will come out with the S-spring still in...
