Hey guys I've got a 99 ranger 4.0 that the oil pump just went out of. But it's not siezed. So I'm faced with the option of rebuilding the 4.0, or doing a 5.0 swap. The only thing I'm wondering about is the gas mileage. Anyone have any first hand experience.

I've got a 5.0 302 in my 2WD '86 Ranger. I thought it would be a hog on gas, but it turns out its better on gas then my '05 Toyota Tacoma, and it only has a 4 banger in it!

You will need a newer EFI 302 especially for emission standards. You can use an Explorer as a donor and most of it is bolt in. If you keep it mostly stock you may notice better milage in some instances. I did a 2wd 302 Ranger with an AOD and driving is mildly it wasn't hard to get 18mpg and sometimes better. There are a few guys who have hit over 20mpg with a V8. A lot is how you drive it and what you did to the engine. My V8 at best ever gets around 14, averages around 8 and worst is less than 4mpg.
