K and N for christmas...worth it?

Wife wants to get it for me for my 2008 ranger sport 4.0 but its expensive up here in Canada is it worth the money for the fuel economy or throttle response? anyone have experience with it?
 
The best answer for you is yes and no and here's why:

A stock air filter such as Purolator #A35192 is $12.99

A K&N "Cold Air Intake" #63-1108 is $330.67

A Spectre Lifetime replacement filter #888243 is $24.99

A K&N stock replacement element #33-2106-1 is $59.49

The cold air intake IS a waste of money because all Rangers come "cold air equipped" already. Now if you want to save money over time any of the stock performance filters would be a great idea because they will save money. Take the Spectre filter. $24.99 is the cost of 2 Purolators and it's warrantied for life. Ask Mrs Santa for a stock panel performance filter and you'll be fine.

Now this is in US dollars but the cost should be similar. Be sure to give her the brand, part number and where to get it if she's anything like my wife you'll get it right the first time!!

welcome to the boards an to get the most out of one you need to use a programer an then both combined you get the best performance
 
Ask her for something useful, such as off road lights... A K&N CAI won't do anything for you.
 
tried K&N on my '36 350 4bbl----no difference....but it looked impressive!
 
Yeah everyone is right. I agree. If you want looks go for it. I have the k and n drop in filer in my factory air box.. It changes nothing.
 
i put a aem brute force on my z71 and i could tell a big difference in throttle response and hi end power, also gas mileage went up about 1.5 mpg
 
I had the K&N before and have used these filters for a very long time on all my bikes as well. Three years ago I switched to AEM and never looked back. I don't have to oil the AEM filter, just wash it and dry it and put it back one. I like it way better then the K&N. I really like it. I bought the cone filter on Ebay and I bought the stainless polished tube on Ebay as well and a throttle spacer. It sounds nice and I do get better throttle response and a bit more pulling power...but I don't think it gives any more hp.
 
I got the afe kit for my 2010, I got it for $214 canadian. It has a full heat shield and seals to the hood. It dosent add a whole lot of noise, but I do notice that the engine doesn't need to work as much at lower rpms. I recommend it as it seems to add a bit more power and torque. I don't think you get the gains that are advertise, but you will get something.

I would get the afe over the k&n because it's cheaper, and it comes with a dry filter, so no oil will screw up your MAF sensor.
 
go get a cheapo spectre air filter from a parts store and save some cash, it does the same thing
 
Any improvements you would get from a K&N are all in your head, you think that because they say you'll get good mileage and such that you actually are, when in reality, you aren't.
