Wiper problem

I was driving my 86 4wd v6 ranger home in the rain yesterday and my wipers just stopped in the middle of the windshield. I got out and pushed them down but that was it no more windshield wipers. Anyone know what thats about.. also how would I access the bottom of the arms because when I pop the hood the firewall is blocking access. Thank you.

if they both stopped, i'd be looking at the wiper motor or the switch. if you can still hear the wiper motor working but the blades aren't moving, then maybe the connecting arm from the motor to the wipers is loose. either way, there is an access panel on the firewall under the pass. side wiper arm. really haven't checked on the drivers side as my problem was just the pass. wiper where that connecting arm had come off. good luck for sure!
