For gods sake... they're lucky they didn't kill someone... you would think that those "experienced loggers" would have used a damn clevis instead of just putting the chain around the ball...

You think? Lol. And yeah, I was not expecting them to just.....wrap a chain around the ball. Balls them self are not rated for a whole lot. Coulda just sheared off....

The ball thing was pretty bad, but the power curve of that thing is outstanding.
I also got a chuckle that the 5.3 still hasn't matched the PI 2V 5.4 for torque.

110,000lbs/22logs - 5,000lbs/log (average) whats wrong with pulling that with a class lll hitch and ball?
Do you not understand how easily that chain can slip off the ball... pulling with the ball like that is complete stupidity, there is absolutely no security for the thing... at least a clevis is closed, and the only way for the chain to come out of it is if it breaks.

Ill agree with that, it wasn't the best setup for hauling logs but I was responding top this...

I mean to shock load and drag like that. Sure a boat/trailer combo could be 5,000 pounds attached to a ball, but its also not plowing the earth as it is dragged up a grade either....
Ah, I apologize then. The ball may have been rated for the load, but the constant slamming of the chain against the ball probably wasn't helping it at all...

And it would be really easy with the slackening and tightening for the chain to slip off the ball. I have so much faith in my luck that I would almost bet that it wouldn't have stayed on for me, and I would have spent a day and half trying to get the log back on the road.

Did you guys watch the other videos in the series?
That motor has over 150,000 simulated miles (weeks of 4000-6000 RPM's in a lab). Then they slapped it into a new Ford....
After the log test they towed 11,300 LBS around a Nascar track for 24 hrs (about 1600 miles) averaging 84 MPH, sometimes exceeding 90 MPH. Only stopping for fuel and tire changes and maybe a driver change.
In the next video they pit the Ford against a Chevy. Pretty amazing little motor that V6 Ecoboost is.
Oh and this is just the Ford F150. There are several videos of the new 6.7L Superduty pwning every aspect of the new Chevy and Dodges.
Oh and I see next to nothing wrong with the ball thing, that was probably a 2-5/16th ball with a 1-1/4" shank meaning if you where to hook a trailer and load up you could tow up to 10,000lbs. And that chain wasn't going anywhere guys and you know it.

I have been around chains enough to know that if it isn't exactly right things can and will go a way that you don't particularly care for.
If I was out in the boonies and there was something I HAD to move and all I had was a receiver with a ball on it, sure I would give it a whirl. But given the option, I would use a clevis hands down. Especially if I am making a promotional video for a truck.

regardless of the ball and chain that engine is something i would love to get my hands on. most engines from the 90's and early 2000's would have failed the dyno test if not from the heat from the extreme cold to extreme heat in 15 min that is that would crack most blocks and they did it over and over then went out and ran the engine across the country. all i know is i want one.
