v8 trans ?

i have a 97 explorer 5.0 as a donor vehicle. my plans are to rebuild the engine and put a cam and port the heads and intake. as for the tranny i want to keep the 4r70w and pu tin in my ranger which is a 96. now i know the explorer is awd and the ranger is 2wd which is the way im building it, my ? is since im rebuilding the tranny anyways can i put the tailshaft and cover from a 2wd 4r70w into my existing 4r70w and drop everything in? if not whats my other options. thanks for you time

You will need to change the output shaft also to make it work with a 2wd. It may be easier and cheaper to just get a 2wd trans and rebuild it. Maybe you can trade a trans shop trans for trans.
 
any idea what year 2wd tranny's will work?
 
Dasfinc was able to find one of the 4x2 Explorer transmission for his swap. Not many up here in the Nord but a lot more common South. Believe that the 4.0L Mustang uses the same transmission. Just remember that all of the 4R70's are computer controlled.

any idea what year 2wd tranny's will work?

96-2k all should work. The 4R70W that I use for my Ranger conversion was out of a 2k Explorer 2wd. These transmissions are very common here in AZ and can be picked up for less then 100.00 all day long. I am using the Baumann TCS to control my 4R70W and it works great.

did you go efi or carb? im thinking im just sticking to efi since it will almost a plug and play from what i have read
