I just bought an 86 xlt recently and am very pleased with it so far. Some nickle and dime stuff but its ok. I didnt notice until today but the seat isnt a highback nor does it have a headrest. That concerns me. What years can I cannabilize for seats that will fit. It has 60/40 seats now. Would like to keep that but if not so be it. Or do they still make add on headrests? Thanks for the help:icon_pepsi:

Sounds like you have the stock bench. 80s Mustangs, and Tempo GTs are the best bets if you want a head rest. The seats are bolt in. That will force you to swap to buckets though.

I'm not aware of any add-on headrests for those seats though.

Dont mind swapping to buckets just want something that will provide protection for my grand kids when they ride in it and also for myself. Thanks

Well I've been through a few accidents, sliding off the road on ice sheets and such, with my Ranger while it had those seats. Didn't hurt my neck.

I'm not sure how old your grand kids are, but if you are worried about their safety in the back seat, head rests on the front seats aren't gonna help. Jump seats are inherently unsafe for children. If you are looking for head support for passengers in the front seat, Tempo GT seats are probably the best bet. I will say tough, 1st gen Explorer buckets are COMFY!!

i don't think you can beat the 86 xlt 60/40 seats, i love the ones in my b2, which is why i don't have bucket seats... they are so comfy

Yeah, those are some pretty comfy seats. I love the buckets in my Navajo though, blue pinstriped, no headrest, just a high back, pretty comfy, too. I might swap 'em out eventually, the driver seat is pretty worn out.

My 60/40 didn't give me enough lumbar support.

You are right those seats are great. I really like them. But I have a ruptured disc in my neck. And if in an accident then possible bad news for me. Need that safety factor. I have 3 grandkids 15,15 and 16 so they sit high in the seat and I dont want them to have a neck injury if possible. The other 3 arent old enough to ride in the front and I wont let ut just want to be safe.
