OH NO HO NO oil pressure

Well I ran the Engine for the intial 20 min break in period on Sunday. I could not get the oil pressure unit to work. I Started it a couple of more times to check the solenoid (I got it to work). Tonight went out to change oil after intial break in. The oil filter was dry.:shok: The oil was clean in the Engine with a little bit of sludge in the bottom a few minor metal filings on the magnet on the drain plug. Plenty of oil in the oil pan. I filled the engine with oil again but left the oil filter off to see if it would pump oil out. Zip Zero nada. I did not get any knocking when I ran the Engine and it still sounds "good". Any ideas on what is going on?:icon_confused: I really don't want to pull the Engine but if I need to, "you do what you gotta do"!
 
clog in the relocator? pinched line?
 
If you ran it for 20 min. and the rockers didnt start clicking,you had to have some oil pressure.

Pulled the lines off the remote oil filter and used my compressor to blow air through them, they are clear, could feel air coming out of the oil filler pipe. How would I know if the lifters were rattling? Every thing seemed to sound OK to me but as they say I ain't an expert and this is my first time. How noticable would the rattle be? I think I am going to pull the distributor, take out the oil pressure sender and hook the old distibutor up to a drill see if oil comes out of the oil pressure hole.:icon_idea: If that doesn't work pull the engine and view the damage, Any suggestions on what to look for? The engine really does sound good.:icon_confused:

Sorry to here this,,,,, distributor drive gear, pump drive shaft, pick up tube or lines reversed on filter adapter... Not good,, if you ran it for 20 minutes,,, I am afraid it is toast,,, sorry man. You need to tear it back down. 20 Minutes with dry filter.......

Prime the motor with a drill, see if oil comes out of the pushrods.
 
You do have the oil pump driveshaft in, right?? Did it happen to fall in the pan by accident without you knowing about it?? Pull the Dizzy and check, and I also agree with above, no oil pressure + 20 minutes of runtime= most bearings shot, lifters scared/damaged, possible/probable rocker damage, etc, etc...

what ranger svt just said x2.... and its probably the oil pump drive shaft not pushed down into the oil pump
 
Check the remote oil relocater tubes. If they are back wards, oil won't circulate through the filter. (voice of experience).

If relocator tubes are backwards is engine still fried? I filled the oil filter before I installed it. The filter was empty when I pulled it which started this whole thread. The lines are clear and The oil pump drive shaft is built into the distributor. I used an old distributor with out the gear on it to prime the engine before I started it!
 
At this point just get it running with oil pressure and see how it runs. Get it up to temp and then do a compression/leakdown and check the vacuum. If you have good oil pressure and the upper end dont make any noise you may get lucky. It`s your call weather you want to tear it down and give it a good inspection. The odds are against it being ok but from my experience if the oil pressure and compression is good and the oil stays clean I would run it till it pukes. You may want to have another one ready in case it does crap out on you. GL
 
word of the day-stupid

Checked relocator hoses, they are in correct. I may have left out the intermediate drive shaft for the oil pump. It was about 3 years ago that I put that part of the project together so I really can't remember. Oh well, an expensive tear down:sad: At least I haven't thrown a rod yet and the system as a whole works. Salvage as much as I can and drive on:annoyed: Tranny still works, starter OK, Headers etc OK, pipes sounded cool. I guess I will spend a couple of long week ends getting it fixed! The wife ain't gonna like it, but such is life. It will be easier to redo because I have every think fitting! I need to clean all the crap oout of the garage first so I can work easier. The wife will be a little happy about that!

Oh yea what did you use to put the engine together with If you oiled everything with hyperlube or lucas when you put it together the cylinders would have taken the most damage or the rings broke in real fast.

I had the engine built by a local company. They really do excellent work and are top notch. I don't have the expertise yet and I have found in life that some things are cheaper in the long run to have professionals do it. Remoldeled the kitchen here a while back ( in the middle of my Ranger project) and alocated the plumbing and electrical to good sub contractors. I know they used good assembly lube, they are quality folks, they rebuilt another engine for me a while back and it ran for ever!:icon_thumby:
