that the engineers that designed the 4.0 and the ones that figured out how to place it in the truck, should be beaten. :icon_rofl:

I think they successfully designed that engine/compartment to be a pain in the butt to work on. From the PCV valve to the thermostat to the tensioner pulley, all 3 have caused me to either lose skin from my hand or cause my hand some sort of pain from having to contort it to fit in a hard to reach spot.

One that would make some of the maintenance/repair easier would be a two piece fan shroud. That would be awesome. :icon_thumby:

Been there, done that and I never have a problem changing the plugs... I don't know what y'all are doing wrong. :icon_rofl:

Seriously. I've changed them twice and never had a problem. :icon_confused:

Didn't say I had a problem, but I did have to use a knuckleand a few extensions.

When it comes to stuff like the front of the engine, sometimes its better to just go ahead and disassemble everything.

My Design conspiracy theory is this....they make the engine as hard to work on as possible so the owner will bring it to the dealer for repairs after the warranty goes out (they're really not concerned how difficult it would be for their own dealership mechanics to repair the engine)....

of course.....everybody already knew that.....

I saw a cartoon once that had two engineers standing over an engine bay and saying something like,"The exhaust manifold needs changed......the number 3 spark plug can still be reached" lol....sure seems true at times. My 3rd car was a Chevy Monza with a factory V-8 w/AC. After working on that the Ranger engine bay doesn't seem so small

You go after the 1994-up 4.0 belt tensioner from the BOTTOM

You go after the passenger side spark plugs through the wheel well.

Talk to me after you've worked on either A) Saab Sonnet III, or 2) Mitsubishi Starion.

The 4.0 RBV is a cakewalk compared to many cars.

Since my body lift, its been pretty good things are easy to get to now, it openen up the engin bay so much I love it and wished i did it sooner

Yup. Regarding the OHV 4.0L, I think it's pretty simple. Haven't done too much on the SOHC 4.0L. After working on a few minivans with the short front nose, and a several Hondas and small Toyotas, you get practice and the knowledge to attack other projects. Also, the right tools & their lengths help a lot.

Work on a Taurus. That'll piss you off.

wait til you do plugs/wires on an LT1 camaro/firebird, alldata quotes 10 hours shop time (for most driveway mechanics that means 20hrs), i found it easier, and faster to lift the body off the k-member, than to try it in the car......after doing it once i'll never do it in the car again

I have had to work on early model Pontiac GrandAm's, the bubble looking Escorts, smaller Buick sedans and, as of late, my wife's Mazda Protege.

All of those were much worse than working on my truck... but that 4.0 engine compartment is still a pain in the but to deal with.
