I have a 98 Ford Ranger V6 4.0, recently when i would start the truck or shortly after there would be a small amount of what appears to be smoke coming from the steering column. it only happens for a brief time and comes out of the top from the emergency flasher button. Today it happened again but a little more smoke and the left blinker lit on the instrument cluster but did not chime like normal. then it stopped and the blinkers work fine. Does any one know what this might be?

thank you for your time

Ummm.... It's your truck trying to catch fire!

I would see professional help IMMEDIATLY unless you are well insured!
I would as a guess it's electrical in nautre, and likely related to the ignition switch.

I would say multifunction switch. I actually seen that smoke come from around the e-flasher button before, It was the multifunction switch, just before it quit.

dude dont even mess around with it. Have it checked out first thing tomorrow. Dont even drive it. It would be horrible to be driving and all the sudden your steering wheel is on fire and your in the middle of traffic or something like that. Definatly a short somewere and to be smoking that means its really serious.

defentaly sounds like you electrical is shorting out somewhere... you should either check it out THOROUGHLY yourself, or take it to someone else to have it looked. That sounds like a very serious problem!

this is kind of an odd one I'm wondering why it hasn't caught fire or had some failure. today one the way home my battery light was flashing on and off if I turned off over drive off the battery light would stay off completely. close to home it shut off all together. It only smokes once in awhile (which still isn't good) only does it after noonish. we'll see what happens.

Thank you the input
