I have a 98 ranger 4.0L. The 4x4 isn't working. I don't think its the vacuum hubs because I manually locked them (via a link on here) and something is spinning when the tires roll (I assume that means there locked). Also, the front drive shaft appears to be working turning so I don't think its the transfer case motor. The only thing I can think of is that something is wrong with the front differential which I know nothing about. When I turn the switch to 4hi or 4 lo the light comes on and I can hear it gear down, but there is no power to the front end. I just had transmission work doen and I'm wondering if there is something that got unhooked accidentally? What could I look for at the differential?

Also, when I have it in four low and shift there is a grinding in the front end center. Is there spindles that could have broken in there?

The 98 ranger front differential doesn't have a Center Axle Disconnect does it? Grinding isn't ever a good thing to hear....and you say the grinding only takes place when your in 4low?

Still sounds like the hubs to me. Are you sure you have them locked correctly?

I took them apart and checked to make sure they were locked, that rod won't turn if its not engaged right? I have only heard the grinding in 4 lo.

You shouldn't hear griding at all. Can you spin the front driveshaft when in 2WD?

Not to sound stupid, but just crawl under and try rotating it ?(obviously turned off and in park)
