What size/style is the lower bolt that holds the alternator on an '89 5.0? It's not a regular hex, so I need to buy a socket for it.

I just checked and it is definitely 12 points, I guess I'm just going to have to buy some 12 point sockets and hope that works.

Sounds like some one put in an aftermarket bolt as every mustang that I have worked has had a 7/16" bolt with a 5/8" hex head on them.

Ever think about just measuring it? If it's not a hex head, what is it? Does it have have the washer/flange (typical) built into it? If that bolt threads into the block it's a SAE. If it threads into a bracket it's metric. You surelly must have sockets so find one that's too small and one that's too big, split the difference.

I have to agree if it is a 12 point it is an "add-on"........ you will probably need a 12 point socket as you said....... unless you can get a 12 point box end wrench on it to loosen it then use vicegrips.......... of course if you going to re-use it the new socket is the way to go. my 2 cents.

It turned out to be an 11mm 12 point, at least that is what I dug up out of the bottom of my tool box that fit. I forgot that I had a few random combination wrenches that had 12 points, 99% of my stuff is 6 point.

I asked because Ford does use torx for some things, which threw me off the first time I needed one of those, I thought this seemed like it might have been another non-standard fastener type like that.

Thank You for the help, hopefully my future posts will be more fun than the ones I've had so far.
