89 ranger 2.9 truck starts fine but key will not shutoff engine i have to disconnect pos battery cable.
when you put cable back on you can here a ticking sound near fuse box area.
batterry was hooked up wrong when replaced for a min could something have fried?
truck runs fine when its running just can't kill engine with key.
thanks
Fixed it was car starter i should have mentioned it had one thanks all for replying.
you have to track down a short circuit promptly. probably in tour starter switch but it could be a lot of places. these things can be a confusing head banger if its not the obvious first guess.

how are you getting the engine to die by disconnecting the battery? I do that and my engine keeps running and I blow all the diodes in the alternator. could be as simple as a bad ignition switch or as complicated as finding a short somewhere. Start with the ignition switch and circuit. if you ask him maybe MAKG will tell you how to test the circuit.

Sounds to me like either the Ignition switch/key switch/column or possibly the alternator. If it is not one of those then it is in the wiring harness somewhere.
Try unplugging the alternator first and see if that solves your problem.
I will agree that you also have possible a charging problem. but fix the runnig first and the other has a very good chance of going away with it.
I have many times started my car with a good battery and swaped in a dead battery while the engine is running to charge the dead one.

Did you try just unplugging the alternator and then seeing if the motor would stay running?
The ticking near the PDB is one of the Relays. The problem could be that the Eca relay is stuck in the "ON" position.
The "rack & pinion" that is inside the steering column does fail from time to time. It is a possibility that you key isn't doing anything. Does it feel like it is working right? Does the key spring back from the start position?
