Does the starter simply not work at all when at operating temp? Does it make any sounds at all?

Seems odd...
Like Viva said, does it make noises at all when you try to start it warm? If it does and just turns over and over, check the TFI module...Sounds like a classic symptom of that. Check for codes as well.

the 4.0 starter for an automatic transmission will fit both a 2.9 auto and a 2.9 standard, but only the 4.0 automatic tranny starter will fit.
the wiring is a little different, the thing is way more expensive, but if you wanna try it, go ahead.
