Need help from the Hive.....

While driving my mother in law's 2004 Ranger FX4 I have noticed a problem that I am not sure what it is.

When accelerating from a full stop, there is a slight 'shutter'. Just a quick little "bu-bump" and then everything is smooth.

Rolling stop, it does not happen.

Does not happen in reverse.

Only after a full stop.

Tranny shifts gears smooth and shifts do not seem weak to me. (Not all that familiar with this truck. Tuned it up and did some PM services on Mom in Law's truck)


My thoughts are tranny.....hope note
U-joint....

Any other folks out there have any experience with something like this?

I am looking for the collective wisdom of the Ranger Station hive.....

Doesn't "feel" engine related. New plugs and wires this AM. Runs nice and smooth......not saying it isn't.....I just wouldn't know how to determine if it was a misfire.

It was doing it before plugs wires etc this AM.


Forgot to mention, it's an automatic.

Well there's your problem.... :icon_thumby:

The only solution, of course is a 5 speed swap!

my old 99 did that to me regularly. i think it is in the rear. like the gears have a little more lash than they should and when you go from a stop the little bump is the gears settling back in place...just my .02
 
Sounds like a U-joint or slip joint issue. Check the u-joints, if there is no play in them, pull the d-shaft, take the slip joint apart, clean, and re-grease it.

Also, check out the sway bar links while you are under there. Mine did that a year ago and I found one of my swaybar bushing brackets was loose.

Actually it's more than likely the driveshaft binding due to axle wrap.

If your 2004 did not have an aluminum driveshaft the shudder would be accompanied by a distinct "clunk" or even a "clang"

Basically it's "normal" but if it really bothers you you can eliminate it with a set of James Duff "Old Style" traction bars (these mount above the leaf spring and cost about $100)
