I am wanting to swap a V8 into a 1984 Ranger 2wd using a T5 tranny. I read somewhere that I can use a T5 from a Chevy S-10 for the mid mount shifter and swap the bell housings. Is this true? Has anybody done this? I have access to a T-5 with no bell housing from a 1988 S-10 that had a 4.3 V6.

The input shafts are different. From what I've read the tail housing and shift rod from the S-10 can be put on a Ford T-5 but the speedo hole doesn't line up with the gear on the output shaft.

Some guys just flip an aftermarket shifter handle around so it curves forward. They say it just clears the seat.

My 86 ranger had a t-5 from a mustang. The only problems i ever had was trying to get into
reverse real quick.

The one problem using the S-10 trans is that is built for a V-6 power. I wouldn't worry if the input shaft was a different spine count but what about the length? The trans mounting holes are indexed 10-15 degs rather than in the Ford normal straight up/down so the shifter clears buckets in the cheby. Not even sure if the bolt pattern is the same but would doubt it. Most have just used the V-8 Ford T-5 and lived with the rearward shift location. Other option are out there but not cheap. I do have pictures of a Ford T-5 using the S-10 tailshaft that I got for use in my Ranchero.

Yeah I'd like to see the pictures you have of your T5 with the chevy tail. Or email them to me. I have seen a website that did offer a mid mount conversion for a Ford T5. Has anybody else seen it? I think it was kind of expensive.

Yep, it was expensive but not any better way to do it in the Ranchero to retain the stock looking fire wall, no hydraulics or cable.

you could use a S-10 T5, but you'll have to adapt it to a Ford bell and switch over everything to match, clutch (splines), pilot bearing, clutch actuation, bell adaption...

You wouldn't want to run one anyway
1. It'd cost you a lot just to adapt it and 2. it isn't as strong as the mustang versions.
You can, however, adapt the tail housing to a Mustang T5 to utilize the "mid shift" of the S-10 version...
