I have a 94 Ford Ranger 4x4 manual tran and the earlier owner swapped a new 4.0 in from an explorer automatic, my code reader shows that the auto tranny is in park during testing when in fact it is in nuetral, do i need an ecm for a manual explorer or for a manual ranger? And are there any other problems it might be causing, my check engine light has come on for some time, but just recently has it not passed emissions, so is there problems that the engine swap is causing, not to mention bad gas mileage, but that comes when you have 35 inch tires. Also i never thought of this but do i need plugs and wires for an explorer 4.0 or can i just get the 94 ranger parts.

Pleas help

Yes, you need a manual transmission computer to turn the MIL off. It's complaining that it can't see the torque converter clutch. You also need to hook up the neutral switch to the computer.

thanks, but do i need the explorer manual computer or ranger, cause the motor came out of an explorer, also where is the neutral switch

In 1994, an Explorer from the front doors forward is identical to a Ranger with a 4.0L. In EVERY respect.

The neutral switch is on the transmission. Though I'm scratching my head as to where else you might expect it to be.

I have a 1994 Ranger that has an explorer motor in it, and I just dealt with this a few months ago. My understanding is that the 1994 Exploders were all SEFI (could be wrong though), and that only California emission 1994 Rangers are SEFI. The wiring harness and computer I got for my swap came out of a 1994 Ranger that was Bath Fire (no cam position sensor).

All I'm getting at is make sure that you get the proper computer, either batch fire or sequential, depending on what your engine currently is.

so then how do i find out which, batch fire or sefi, my engine is.

the 90-92 4.0 was the same in either vehicle.....come 93-94 explorer, they had the SEFI which included a cam sensor in the hole plug at the back of the engine where a distributor for a 2.9 would have sat. On the 90-92 engines, there was just a plug in that spot....on the 93-94, you should have a sensor screwed into this spot with a pigtail coming out...that is the cam sensor....

so exchange anything you want from a 90-92 exploder and ranger....but in 93-94 they will be different in that aspect..which means different computer, different engine characteristics and the way it runs all around.....

Like Timbit said, check for a camshaft position sensor it's right behind the upper intake manifold I am told. If you have one, then you have sequential, if not you have batch fire.
