You have to tear it down and replace the output shaft with a 4x4 shaft. The 4x4's output shaft is longer, a 2wd shaft won't engage the transfer case.

Besides, if you're gonna change the tranny, drop the weak auto and find an M5OD manual.
well that what i plan on doing later i have a 2000 ranger im trying to get a title on then im going to do a body, motor ,trans swap.it a 2wd than i can have every thing i need it got the m5r1 ill change the shalf in it and hook it up 2 the transfer case on the 89 will the ele 4 wheel drive wire plug in to a 2000 wiring harness
