I have gotten to the point where I thought I knew what and where the CV joint is and does. can anyone varify me with some images and information?

That is a pretty standard cv-shaft there. Your ranger doesn't have them. They are generally used on applications where you need to have a drive axle with independent suspension, such as FWD cars or newer Explorers.
 
CV axles are well, axles. They connect the differential to the wheels like a driveshaft. The CV joint at each end of the axle allows the axle to pivot as the wheels steer, and as the wheels bounce over bumps.
