I am doing an 4.0L engine swap into my manual 86 B2. The B2 did not come with a tach which I can't understand since it was a manual trans. I have the doner 93 explorer that has a tach. Will the explorer cluster fit into the 86 B2

Just get an aftermarket. Not many trucks, manual or auto came with tachs back then. People had gotten by just find without them for 80 years before that.

Well I do want to stick with the original B2 86 instrument panel. I suspect that the ranger 4.0L had a tach in around that same year? That is if I could find one.

My '87 ranger and '91 ranger instrument clusters [both with tach]don't interchange, the plug in back on the right side is different [ sitting down facing dash]. They also don't fit the dash. Haven't tried but maybe the new tach can be installed in the old cluster, or other way. Then you have to do some wiring. I didn't have time or knowledge of the wiring. You could look up the pinout for the computer and do it yourself. In my book easier to install aftermarket [like adsm08 suggests]. Hope I made sense.

If you are dead set on keeping your old dash and getting the 4.0 in, it's possible, there is gonna be a lot of wire work though.

What did you mean by the "Ranger 4.0...about the same year" part?

I am going to try and find a cluster with a tach and wire it in. I will let you know the results.
