I had originally bought my ranger for economy, but now I find myself wanting to do some camping and Towing a small pop-up

It has the 4:10 axle, I added air shocks, frame mounted receiver hitch,
I think the book says It can only tow about 1400# with manual trans
and 2200# with Auto, This pop up I am wanting has an empty weight of
about 1370# and tonque weight about 140#

I know that some basic camp gear is gonna add some weight

You guys think this will handle ok for short hops?

This Southeast Texas Gulf Coast is pretty flat, few hills

Thanks for advice

Dave

I have a 2.3L and 5 spd manual in my '97. I'd say about 4,000 lbs it'll run pretty well out of steam, I've managed about 6,000 probably little more (42' boom lift trailer laden with batteries - I wouldn't recommend it). And I'm running 3.73's.

The brakes are still the same as the higher rated Rangers, so it'l still stop fine. Which really is the important issue. Just try to slip the clutch as little as you can get away with and it'll pull it.

Oh, and this is dropping off, not picking up.

You'll be fine. Ford messed up the tow ratings on more recent manual trans trucks so they wouldn't have to do warranty repairs on the clutch if the driver is a retard.

That being said, the owner's manual for my 95 2.3 lima says that with the 2.3 and 4.10 gears the max is 2000# and your motor is more powerful than mine. You should have no problems.

Its got the 4.10's you wont have to slip the clutch at all, unless you have larger tires. I had a guy selling a 91 with 4.11's and 4 banger and he pulled a 30 ft boat.

should be fine. they underrate the manuals so they don't have to deal with clutches getting fried under warranty. If you really know how to drive stick you can get away with the 2200#'s.
