i am planning on removing the cloth/foam headliner and replacing it with crinkle-finish black ABS sheeting. it will need either screws or rivets to hold it up. is the sheet-metal of the roof thick enough to drill holes in for rivets? or will the rivets poke out the top? i would like to know this before i take down (and likely destroy in the process) a perfectly good headliner just to find out it won't work

Its only about 1/32" thick. It's no thicker than any of the other sheet metal on the vehicle. In fact it's probably the thinnest piece of the vehicle since everything else has it folded somewhere.

just plot and use the supports.

i guess i should have re-worded the title to "is the Roof layered?" or is it just one layer? it sounds like its just one layer?

where are the cross-braces? are there enough of them and are they placed so that i could rivet to them and be alright?

remove the liner and get it awn self explanatory......or just strip the material and leave the board and carefully attatch to the board

either of those were my original plan. i was just hoping that the roof was more than some 16ga sheet metal. either way i will make it work. i really want to remove the headliner entirely so that it tucks under the plastic trim pieces that go around the headliner. i'm sure the extra thickness will not stuff under there

why not just leave the bar metal? you could easily paint it to match the interior, or at least get close

^^ oh yeah that will be plenty to work with
