I have an 89 Ranger 4X4 extened cab, with a 2.9, automatic, and 250k on the vehicle. In cold weather, when I push the 4X4 button on the dash, the black box behind the left jump seat, 'clicks', and no 4X4. There is a white button on the top of the black box, when pushed, a red LED glows. I know there are 3 components in the system. I am looking for diagnostic starting points and pssible cures. Try cleaning your shift motor first.

4x4 controller might be bad.

My old 92 4x4 did the same thing. I ended up replacing my shift motor and it fixed the problem.

Nevermind on the controller. If the LED Glows, it's in working order.

The 4WD controller is working if you hear the relays click, and the LED flash (I think it was) 4 times when you push the white self-test button ('94 & down controllers).
If the LED glows steady, then the self-test failed.

You MUST unplug the two wiring connectors off the end of the controller for the test to work properly though (leaving it connected only by the pigtail connector).
