I was just reading the thread -ahhhh no 4x4 and read jg09's post.
fortunately, the tailhousing of all A4LD's have the mounting points for the shifters, whether they were manual shift or not, so it's just a matter of cutting a hole in the floor and putting the shifter and linkage in.

If I understand, this means you can take the manual shifter and linkage from another BII that has an auto trans, install it, and I guess unplug the electric shift motor and you now have a manual t-case? If this is the case can the linkage be added without dropping the t-case?

Umm no. Not as I understand your question.

You can take the shifter and cut a hole for it and bolt it up to the TRANS.

You need a manual shift T-case to make it work (the autos and the manuals are different internally and the shift pegs are different and in different places) so at that point you need to drop the t-case to replace it.

so his post is saying that the linkage bolts on to the trans but you still need the manual t case. When he said tailhousing, I thought t-case. But how sweet would it be if all you needed was the linkage!

It would be awesome, but alas, its not that simple.

The tail housing is not the same as the t-case. It's a section of metal that bolts to the back of the trans case and either has the open end and bolt holes for a t-case, or on a 2wd trans tapers down to a cone and has a slip joint for the front of the d-shaft.
