Ive got a 91 Ranger 4x4,5speed and a 2.9L...Im swapping in a 4.0L from a 92 Explorer with an automatic transmission...will the computer from the Explorer work with this combination?? Are there any mods that i will need to do?? Do i need to get a computer that is programmed for a manual tranny?? Any help is appreciated...thx in advance Jeff

there never was a 2.9 in the explorer. the only engine the first gen exploder came with was a 4.0. the automatic transmissions are all the same between the Ranger and Explorers from those years 91 to 94 should work

Um, I think he is taking the 4.0 out of the Ex and putting it in the Ranger.



It will run if that is what you are asking. It will be pissed off that the trans isn't listening to it, but the engine will run.

I'd try to find a 4.0/Manual PCM at the junk yard. It will be happier and you will get a bit more power.

I know where there are a couple early model Explorers with manuals if you can't find one near you. As long as you pay yard price and shipping I can go grab one for you.

adsm08,u are correct with what i am doing...(i had an error in my original posting) which led to the answer that mwood1985 responded with.
Ill do some checking on monday to see if i can find one locally...ill post here if i do or dont find one...Ty for youre respone Jeff
