was doing some work on my Ranger this weekend. The intake manifold seals were leaking, causing a vacum leak throwing a code that both banks were running lean.

Anywho, when I was removing the upper intake manifold I noticed something that is wacky in my mind.

On the passenger side of the intake there are three hoses all going to this one fitting.

Back side of same fitting, sticks into intake.

One of the hoses feeding this fitting come off of one of the heater hoses.

If I stick my finger in the hole in the intake and look in from the throttle body I can see my finger. How is water not getting into the intake?

There is another hose from the same heater hose that runs to the back of the drivers side valve cover, why?

Are you talking about the red hard plastic hose with the black loom over it? That is a vacuum line that supplies vacuum to the heater control valve.

The coolant line going to the back of the drivers side valve cover is for the heated PCV valve that is located in the back of that valve cover.

I'm having a hard time following...but if you can stick your finger in a hole and see it when you look in the throttle body, that's a vacuum leak. And will cause unmetered air to enter your engine and cause the engine to run lean.
