would all 4.0 rangers have an 8.8 in them?

yes, and any 1998 or newer supercab 4x4 will have an 8.8 as well if I remember correctly

just keep in mind that a ranger 8.8 is a 28 spline while the explorer one that everyone usually swaps in is a 31 which is a little stronger

Unfortunatly not all of them. I am one of those unfortunate souls who got a 7.5 in theirs. Mines even a 1999.
