My 2000 ranger with 3.0 is reving at fast idle, 2000 - 2300 RPMs. Its been doing it for 3 days now. Makes it a little hard to slow down, like always on cruise control.

What is the fix to this problem ?

Read the codes, only a EGR problem there.

Please help, this is the wifes truck and she dont like it. And she tells me to fix it !

Thanks, Buzz

Step 1: Fix the EGR problem... It is likely the DPFE (basically an EGR controller) They are pretty common problems. If that sensor is out, you will be getting more air than the computer knows about, and essentially have a vacuum leak. This will cause a high idle.

Step 2: (If that doesn't work) My old standby for high-idle problems in a Ranger is the IAC. Mine sticks... when it does it idles high. I give it a whallop once or twice and it breaks loose for a month or two. When it starts to idle high again, I repeat...

Is the truck getting warmed up? If not the computer might think it needs to stay at high idle because it's cold.

My Ranger 2000 4cyl was idling at 4000 RPM

It would do it when I started out cold sometimes and rainy weather seemed to make it more likely. Would have been impossible to drive if it were an automatic, or at least a lot more difficult.

The truck would run at 4000 RPMs and no less. Unplugging the IAC (Idle Air Control) connector seems to be the temporary solution. I did it once and plugged it back in and it went back to normal idle.

Here's a photo of it:
