So I have decided the full size body life just isn't for me. just to wide and to easy to damage the body in the tight trails I wheel on. Heres what I had...

Pages 1-33 were on EB width axles or "narrow" axles. Page 34+ was all full width axles.
The rims are what really make the difference. You can get rims with 2" Backspacing that REALLY make the tire stick out past the fender or you can get up like 5" Back spacing and really tuck the tire back into the fender. Alot of guys with one tons will run an H2 rim which has alot of back spacing and it pulls the tire back in towards the body making not as wide. I personally like it wide....stability and the body is just that much further out of harms way.
Robert_1967
03-17-2010, 09:27 AM
my plan is to use a full lenth axel and then make a set of fender flairs to make it look like a duellly.
OH and by the by I like your build and feel sorry for that poor old tree :) but on the other hand that old tree does get to help in the building of your ride.

Yeah I am surprised that tree limb is still attached.
Looking things over this morning, the front two core support mounts line up with where I had the f250 core support (bonus), the front cab mounts just need the brackets moved and reattached to the frame and should work, and just need to fab up two mount brackets for the rear cab mounts and should be golden. Going out in a bit to get some supplies and taking the wife to lunch then back at it all day and hope to have the cab mounted, steering hooked up and get it pushed back into the garage to start the glorious elec war that will be my truck lol.

I think I got the wiring ready in the truggy's dash. Haven't actually plugged the cluster in yet, but when I turn the key on the fuel pump runs and it will crank Didn't try to actually start it yet since theres no trans cooler hooked up. But nothing smoked sizzled or burned so its a good start. Also got the front fenders on and the inner wheel wells along with most the engine harness put into place.

3. Battery tray built
4. Under hood wiring mostly done

Still need to find seat belt buckles, build exo cage, plumb radiator and mount it.
thats the short to-do list.

About the 4 door. That's pretty badass really. How often do you plan to be back there? Where are you keeping your tools/spare parts? Structurally it'd be best to build the exo so its permanently shut, but if you need to get in there quite a bit, you may be able to design around it.
How far off the body would a single vertical support need to be in order to allow both the front and rear doors to open? If you could bend the tube to match the profile of the edge of the door, it may not have to be that far out. May be something to look in to anyways.
Edit: got to thinking and did some rough calcs. Say you're using 1.75" tube, and your door is 36" long (just guessed). If the tube is centered over the front door/rear door joint, the edge of the door would have to swing over, I said 1" in my calcs, to clear the tube. For it to swing that much, the door needs to open ~13.5*, and with a 36" long door open 13.5*, that puts the tube ~8.5" away from your door.
Of course if your door is actually shorter than 36", it would be less. Or if you're using smaller tube it would be less. And it will actually be a little less since I used 1" instead of .875" (1.75/2). Either way, that's pretty far. Hmmm....

Looking at this build, it got me wondering, using the coils is it possible to push the axle all the way to the end of the frame out front, and could you do the same on the rear using coils?:icon_idea:
I was just wondering, if some people are always saying that they need more articulation, why not use coils on the back also, IF it can be done.:icon_confused:

yes it is possible to move either axle almost anywhere you want it to change the wheel base keeping in mind driveline angles with the right knowledge and fab tools. and yes lots of rigs are setup using rear coils (newer heeps have coils in the rear from the factory) but require the use of links which must be setup very precisely for the suspension to function correctly which in many cases is more difficult than setting up a leaf sprung suspension. linked suspensions also provide better approach and departure angles as well as eliminating axle wrap.
now back to the build thread.

Truck worked AWESOME...
only issues...
the new "extra duty" reman pump that I installed on Monday, apparently when it was reman'd they had to fix the body of the pump and brazed it. It developed a pin hole leak that was spray straight onto the exhaust manifold. So it got removed and we welded the hole over. Also I would randomly slip my serp belt off now and then. I also destroyed my rear driveshaft, and blew the ujoint for the front shaft at the tcase. Both were fixed at camp and was able to wheel the rest of the weekend.
The truck got worked HARD, made alot of climbs I used to think I had no business even trying. And if I haven't already said it 40" LTB's KICK ASS
I have a few vids of some 4 wheel burn outs on some ledges and lots of other vids I will upload later.

I ate 2 D60 stubs/lockouts, one tie rod, and one shock (stuff I know of). Broke a tie rod on winch hill, fixed it on winch hill then 3 minutes later blew the RF stub/lockout. Then wheeled 3 wheel for a while. Tried the "new" trail and grenaded the other stub and lockout. My winch got a hell of a work out today. Not sure when the shock got bent though?

1 RF Stub/Lockout-ate the bearing and seal in the spindle and marred up the spindle where the stub fits through it. The end of the spindle in the threaded area is untouched (nuts spun off with no issue). Damage to the spindle is marginal, I think I can clean it up and a new bearing with press back into it and seal up decent. The inner shaft has the ever so smallest twist in the splines, almost can't even see it.

Damn John, fawkin killed it this weekend haha. Those are some weird stub breaks. I'd be looking into what would cause a failure like that, for curiosity's sake.
It must've been a part breakin weekend for everyone. I was at the badlands all weekend and a wrangler I was wheelin with broke a shock and track bar mount, I broke a lockout (Warn "premium", replaced at camp), ran into Kyle M. and he toasted his slave cyl. (pulled trans and replaced at camp), broke a d35 stub shaft (replaced at camp), and dented and bent his rear driveshaft (driving 6hrs home in front wheel drive :D).
I was there with 3 people on bikes/quads. Hit a rock with the quad, broke the lower a-arm, and one of the bikes seized up 2 hrs later.
Hell of a weekend.

Hopefully these will last a bit longer then the 15 year old stock ones did.........when you think about it, I have wheeled on those stock stubs now for almost a full year on 38's and 4d's and wheeled hard. Plus, when I bought that 60 the prior owner obviously was pretty hard on it considering the pinion was broken clean at the yoke. So those stockers have seen there use.

Well finally got the new stubs in, what a PITA. Had to trim 5/8" off the end of the stubs to fit in the ford hub. But then the lockout bottomed out on the stub shaft before sliding on the way into the hub so I couldn't install the outer c-clip. Tried the wider bearing race on the inside of the hub but that still didn't give me enough. So I had to file the splines deeper down the length of the stub. Now everything fits together.
Also have to give a big to Automasters in GR. I bought my skyjacker shocks last year from them and I had two that developed leaks. I stopped in there and they warrantied both shocks with NO hassle. I have bought lots of shocks from lots of places, and every time I have ever tried to get them warrantied for any reason I was always met with bs and hassle and excuses and was never taken care of. It was nice to get it taken care of easily. I had planned to get a new 3" downpipe for the turbo on my 97 powerstroke from an online vendor, but after they took care of me on the shocks I had them order it up through them as well as a dual gauge "A" pod for a future pyrometer and trans temp gauge.

Or Drive Flanges.
Instead of having a lockout where you can turn the dial from free to lock, a flange/slug is just a splined puck that locks it in 4wd ALL the time and they are stupid strong.

Looks much better now with some new/used rubber and some decent rims.
I need to finish the "mall cage" and do the left ball joints and its ready for the dunes. I also hacked the stock muffler off and recycled an old cherry bomb.

Need to go up to my shop and fix a tire, one has a screw in it, and other then that the bronco should be ready for the dunes tomorrow.
http://axcessmypics.com/photos/photo02/53/9d/946ed9fd6224.jpg
Made it so it would fit under the top.
The height of the cage is a good 4-5"s above my boy head when he sits in his booster seat in the rear.
So the Bronc is up to par now, need to get the mbrp downpipe on my diesel and the 4" kit I am gonna put together. Mount one shock on the truggy and install the drive flanges whenever they show up and that will be ready for next weekend.

So I called the company I ordered my flanges from and was like WTF, I ordered them on the 11th and they shipped the same day as they say.
Well got the tracking number and sure shit, they shipped on the 11th, ups shows picking them up at 5:56pm and that was the last record of them. Nothing since then, they are lost between here and Texas apperently.

So no word back on UPS, so I talked with the company of the flanges Thurs morning and they were gonna send me another set out. I asked if I paid the overnight charges if they would send them that way. That way I could have them for tomorrows outing. So I did paid them $60 to overnight at 9am Thursday....................I still don't have them :(.

Yeah I got them on Monday.....suppose to be overnighted from Thursday morning.
So I go to install the flanges...
Install puck into hub, install snap ring, go to install Alan bolt through the cover and it does not fit. Hole in the cover is drilled to small. The hole is also countersunk on the cover. So I Redrill the cover so the Alan bolt fits through and then redrill the countersunk so it sits inside the cover. Go to install the cover and the four bolt holes in the cover do not line up with the 4 holes in the flange. Grab the unmolested cover and compare that to the flanges and same thing the cover holes do not match the flanges holes.
I finally called them yesterday afternoon. Turns out it is the covers themselves that are bad. And they are now out of stock, not sure when they will get more, but as soon as they do I will get new covers.
Furthermore the guy said he questioned mine in the first place but wanted to get me something out asap due to the first set going MIA, so he sent them anyways.
The Slugs are drilled with a 1 7/8 square bolt patter and the covers are drilled 2" square and to small of holes as well.
So i am running the slugs only, no covers. Which means no mud or my bearings are toast since they are not sealed.

So turns out the damage to the LR door has made it so I can not close the LF door lol.
And at some point the LF tire hit the fender/core support so hard it broke the core support on the left side where it attaches to the frame mount.

The rear will be easy to place where I need it, but the front is gonna be a PITA, I moved everything so far forward on my frame, now I am gonna need to move it back quite a bit. Should be interesting for sure. I am gonna put the body on my 96 f250 2wd frame.
Once I pull the ranger cab off the frame I will no longer have anything on the truck that will resemble a RBV anymore.

Oh ok, I used to stock Eb frame. It is nice and strong being its already fully boxed plus its narrow so the springs are further from my tires. I'm running leafs up front. I streched both the front a back 4" more than stock. I had to trim alot of fender for clearance also. I even had to trim the corner off the grile for clearance.
CheapThrillB2

I;ll probably narrow the front..
Personally I am not to big on boxed stock frames. When they rot from the inside you generally don't know about it till its to late.

Well went to drummond this past weekend. Disappointing finale to the ranger truggy :(.
10 minutes into wheeling Turtle Ridge I blew the ujoint at the tcase on the rear output. Damaged the yoke on both sides of the joint. Could of gotten it fixed but we only had about 3 hours to play at turtle ridge so it was pointless. Parked it and rode around with the Grassman the rest of the afternoon. Thankfully it was the last day. I did get a full day of trailriding on Friday with no issues.
Oh well, on to new things. Time to start the EB.
Ferry ride over to the island.

Tried to fit between the trees (which I did). I had removed the front section of exocage to give the tires more room since they rubbed. Well had I left the cage on I would of fit. Instead the left over section acted as a spike to catch me. Just hooked a winch to the exo and pulled the body sideways to get the bar to clear the tree and up and through I went.

Well the front axle is out and most the brackets associated removed. Now to figure out where to put it. I was hoping for a wheelbase of 104" but at the same time leaving the grille alone. I think the only way that can happen is with approx 97" of wheelbase

Thats the same problem I ran into with mine. I ended up settling on a 100" wheelbase. It seems to work well but I still wish it was about 6" longer.

Yeah not sure where I am going right now. IF I wanted it stupid tall it wouldn't be a problem but keeping it low and flexy with 4d's is difficult lol.

I did get my brake pedal assembly installed and the booster/master along with the gas pedal. Built a bracket to adapt a later model column, just need to get one.
I am picking up some fox air shocks for the front next week though.
