I don't remember that. Where did you hear that? While wikipedia is not the end all be all, it doesn't really allude to anything like that.

Granted it "started as a email distribution list of friends, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area" , but the dots dont' necissarily connect there. Now maybe the events promoted did involve a fudgery, who knows.
