different bell housings ?

I was looking at a used trans for my 98 ranger 4.0 4x4 5 speed. I thought I had found a rebuilt one, however the gentleman I talked to stated that it was from a 94 3.0 and that the bell housing did not line up for a 4.0. I checked the charts they both use the M5OD R1 but is the bell housing different?
 
they are different. the 2.9 and 4.0 share the same pattern but you don't want a 2.9 tranny on a 4.0 nothing good will come out of it
