knock on wood before i write this....

i've owned it since new. i've got 172k miles, i perform routine maintenance on all consumable items, oil, gear boxes, plugs/wires, seafoam, etc.

most of my miles are easy highway miles.

how many miles can i reasonably expect? i seem to recall the dealer saying this my had a new motor design which was designed/produced in germany, any truth to this? does it matter? what reputation does this motor have?

Well most ranger engines are notorious for lasting atleast 300,000 miles if they are taken care of. I don't know about the SOHC 4.0L but pretty much... 2.3L, 2.8L, 2.9L, 3.0L, and 4.0L OHV all have been able to last 300,000 miles to my knowledge.

As for the engine being built In germany I think it might have been.... I'm not sure. I do know that the old 2.8L, 2.9L, and 4.0L OHV were in the same Cologne engine family and alot of parts are transferrable, I think they were designed in Cologne Germany...

My '03, 4x4,4.0 has 237k on it with absolutely no issues whatsoever! Keep up on your PM and you'll get another 170K easily.
Happy Motoring!

If ya don't do something stupid with it you should wear out everything except the engine. Towing huge loads with the pedal pressed against the floor and not gaining speed is a NO NO! Puts lots of torque on the rod bearings.. causes quick wear..
If you don't catch a small coolant leak you could be changing head gaskets. If you don't tune it and watch to see/hear misses and repair them right away.. bad things happen.
But with what you have posted the little guy should last at least 300K.. From there no telling how long it will last.
And yes it is a german engine built under license by ford.
Big JIm

Preventative maintenance and care will keep any vehicle going, then comes restoration. When I don't see a Model T driving in a parade or a P51 Mustang barrel rolling in an airshow I will worry about my Ranger.

Good luck and good times.
