hey i have a 89 ranger with the 5 speed and 2.9 and it will not go into 4x4 its stuck in 2wd..is there a trick...? i have tride to push it vary hard kick it and it will not move..

is it electrical or manual. if manual remove the shift linkage and try to move it by hand you should have no problems. it may need to be up on jack stands and the trans in neutral so that you spin the drive shaft to make it easier to shift. if this works try to adjust the shift linkage. there isnt much adjustment but it might help

i dont know ...this is my 1st ranger....im a toyota man

I don't think that low fluid would cause the lever not to move, or at least not before the case itself locks up.

I would check the linkages underneath the truck to make sure they are not binding up on anything.

Try pulling it over to the left, towards your legs, and back to see if it will engage.
