hello
i have an 88 ranger and i need to change the right side drive axle. i am having a hard time removing the spindle. i removed all 5 bolts but still cant seem to get it loose from the knuckle. i have tried beating it side to side with a block of wood and hammer (it worked before ) but no luck this time.
any better ways or ideas????

Theres no easy way to do it. Just put some penetrating oil around it. And keep pounding it. What I did that worked pretty good was use a chisel. Just keep beating on it and working around it. Took me a good half hour, hour.

Yes there is, its called a slide hammer with a hub socket attachment. A few pulls and it comes off everytime!

Careful not to damage the threads.. Those things may as well be made of solid gold.

An alternative is to put some junk manual hub spindle nuts (sometimes free at the junkyard) on the threads and whack the #$@% out of them with a hand sledge.

Also another way using the hub nuts is to thread a hub nut onto the spindle, and then use a 3 jaw puller and press against the end of the axle shaft while working around the spindle with a hammer and chisel.

Yep, you do have a gold mine in your shed. I ruined both mine and had to buy a WHOLE front axle to get some that were good.

I didn't get the see the axle because it was in northern ohio, so when I got it, both of spindles on it were toast too. The bearing was shot. I ended up using a thread file and repairing mine.

LMC truck wants $175 a piece for them.

Yeah, I've never had trouble finding those at the junkyard.

They are very, very, VERY easily inspected in the field, so there is no reason to buy new.
