LED's in Instrument Clusters

I read the 11 page thread on this website about installing LED's in the instrument cluster, but I still have a few questions.
  1. Which style of LED should I buy, in order to not have any Hot Spots in the dash?
  2. How many bulbs should I need for an instrument cluster without the tach?
  3. Do you recommend changing out all the service lights too (check engine, ect.)?
  4. How many bulbs are there in the A/C cluster?

Thanks for any advice in advance that you all can help me out with. Like I said, I have searched on this forum and others, but I have not found any consistent answers. This topic should really be a sticky.

I did the research too and this is what I came up with (assuming your ordering super bright LED's)

1. I would go for the WLED4 with a 90 degree spread (not sure if it will cause hot spots as most say they aren't too bad even if they have them.)

2. You should need 6 bulbs for the gauge cluster reguardless of tach or not.

3. You can change out the service lights too but i found that jumps the bill up alot as theres 10+ lights for those, if they work fine i would just leave em.

4. In the HVAC unit there can be either one or two... some had two but I'm not sure which ones.

All HVAC units use two, the older ones use 194s but the newer units use the really tiny bulbs.(cant remember the number but it's the size of an LED)

Hot spot as in temp? LED's don't get hot at all. I tested that before I installed them. Left the dash open with the lights on for 20 minutes and they were cool. Also don't worry bout the "green" film. the LED's will over-ride the green color.

Sorry bout the crappy pic. Slow shutter speed vs shaky hands. lol

No he ment hot spots as in the part like right at the 45 mph mark where the light would directly hit the illumination part and cause a bright spot.

And I'm pretty sure all HVAC units use the 194 bulbs. and My 84 only had one bulb in the unit if i remember correctly.

Thanks Guys for the help. I think I will be ordering the wledx4 in blue for my truck. Again, thanks for the advise.

Not all HVAC units use 194s, i know because i soldered 194LED bulbs in to my unit(they would not fit otherwise)

All the "round" dash models have 2 lights.
